The Museum Memories Project is an oral history documentation project started to bring museums closer to people through sharing of personal museum memories. It is a free, digital archive available on https://www.themumeproject.com/
We undertook a survey in an attempt to help museums become more accessible and inclusive for People with disabilities and for people from all genders and sexualities.
In the Phase 1 of the survey we requested a focused group of ‘The Museum Memories Project’ contributors to asses the museums they had visited in terms of accessibility and inclusion. We prepared a list of queries and they travelled back into their memories of the museums they have visited and replied.
We are sharing our results of Phase 1:

Is there a Phase 2? Yes…
In the Phase 2 of the survey, we request ALL of you, anywhere in the world, to take part in it and assess all the museums as visitors for their access provisions. This will help us know which museums are more access positive than others and learn from each other. Together, we will create Access Positive Museums across the globe.
*Points to keep in mind – While visiting a museum or heritage space*
‘The Museum Memories Project’ has been attempting to make both museums and visitors aware of what makes museums more accessible and inclusive. Our objective is that, together, we positively create a memorable museum experience.
The survey has two parts:
*Part 1: Persons with Disabilities*
– Did you notice/ find a separate washroom for PwD?
– Did you find the content legible, with accessible font in the correct size?
– Did you find any representation of PwD in the content or the objects displayed?
*Part 2: People of all Genders and Sexualities*
-Did you find the signage inclusive for all genders? Eg. signages beyond men/ women
– Do you think that the people of all genders and sexualities were represented or addressed in the content and the display of the museum?
– Did you find any Pride Tours organised by the museum?
Our questions range from how easy it was to learn about the museum to reaching it, parking, buying tickets to representation of people with disabilities, and from all genders and sexualities in the display and content. We would be so happy if you could share this post and make it viral – do encourage more people to fill in the survey, after you have filled it in yourselves.
